As you read this blog article, please keep in mind that much what I say in it is the personal opinion of myself and my swimming school. In all of my 20+ years of experience in swim training is that parents should not rely on flotation aids for their children’s safety. So, for those parents reading this, please don’t rely on the floaties. Let me explain.
There are some swimming schools who do rely upon using flotation devices. There are other schools who swear against them. One of those schools is this one… mine… Life Saver Survival Swim School.
While using these devices, they do allow children to have fun, keep their heads above water, and eyes open. The problem is that children begin to rely upon these devices. Without them, the child struggles, but it becomes much easier to train them to swim.
Parent’s Begin to Rely on the Floaties
Problem – Parents begin to rely on the floaties they placed on their children. They don’t give their children 100% of their attention while they are in the pool. Often, the parents won’t even go in the water with them.
And, that is a BIG PROBLEM!
I personally believe that if a child is in the water, an adult should be in the water with them and they should be within arm’s distance.
Don’t Freak Out if You Are Using a Swim School that Uses Them
Some swimming school use flotation devices to help them with class management. They might not be teaching their swimming lessons in as small of a class as we do here at Life Saver Survival Swim School.
My classes are taught on a one-on-one basis. Not all schools do that.
Some swim schools are teaching groups of children to swim at the same time. They might have a number of children around and using flotation devices is for the children’s safety since the instructor can’t give 100% of their attention to everyone .
As a Reminder…
I had much rather NOT see parents use flotation devices at home. CONSTANT SUPERVISION while children are in the water is a MUST!
DO NOT let your child become dependent upon these aids. DO NOT let your child become someone who can’t swim without these devices. Don’t rely on the floaties.
