There are a lot of reasons why a child needs to learn to swim. Of course, there are all of the physical benefits that a child gets from physical exercise. However, I don’t think the physical benefits are the most important reason why a child needs to learn to swim. I believe the mental benefits of swimming to a child far outweigh the physical benefits.
Most young children see older children and adults swimming. I can remember as a child before I could swim, I would watch others who could swim and I would think, “I’ll never be able to do that! That is impossible to do. That’s amazing.”
I would hold my breath and stretch out, only to choke and sink in the water.
That is where the psychological benefits of learning to swim become so important! Learning to swim to a child who has previously thought the task was impossible to do, only proves to a child that they can do almost anything if they give it the right effort. This is a huge hurdle in a child’s mind!
Learning to swim stimulates the mind and increases a child’s emotional development. Learning to swim when the child previously thought it was an impossibility, psychologically means so much to a child. Don’t discount this development. We might look back and think it wasn’t that big of a thing. However, in child development, it was huge!
